Learning From the Field:Insights & Recommendations for Volunteer Centres in Alberta
Learning From the Field is Volunteer Alberta's research report exploring what it means to be a volunteer centre in Alberta today and what role these organizations should play as the province's volunteerism landscape continues to evolve. Drawing from an exploratory survey, literature review, 17 interviews with nonprofit, municipal, and FCSS staff, and ongoing learning circles with the Alberta Volunteer Centre Network, this report introduces the concept of volunteerism infrastructure, the coordination, investment, and relationships that make volunteering possible and sustainable.
Findings confirm that volunteer centres act as trusted community connectors, while also building capacity for nonprofits, municipalities, and community groups. The report explores shared challenges linked to funding and capacity gaps, highlights common successes, and closes with recommendations, advocacy priorities, and opportunity areas for the sector going forward.
