Canada Survey of Giving, Volunteering and Participating (CSGVP)
The Canada Survey of Giving, Volunteering and Participating (CSGVP) provides the most comprehensive overview of the contributions of time and money Canadians make to nonprofit and charitable organizations and to each other. Conducted in 1997, 2000, 2004, and 2007, the CSGVP surveyed a random sample of Canadians on how they:
- Gave money and other resources to charitable and nonprofit organizations;
- Volunteered time for charitable and voluntary organizations and for individuals directly; and
- Participated in organizations by becoming members.
Please note that report topics may vary between survey years and that the subjects or provinces covered are not necessarily the same from year to year. The CSGVP is collected every three years. The next set of data is expected to be collected in 2010 and will be distributed in 2012 although there is no funding to create the report Caring Canadians for use by the sector.
Reports provide the most in-depth analysis of the Canada Survey of Giving, Volunteering and Participating. Each year links to a complete listing of reports, covering a variety of topics, for that survey year.

National Survey of Nonprofit and Voluntary Organizations (NSNVO) – 2006
The National Survey of Nonprofit and Voluntary Organizations (NSNVO) is the first-ever, large-scale survey of nonprofit and voluntary organizations in Canada. The survey provides detailed information on the size and scope of the voluntary sector in Canada, including types of organizations, what they do, their budgets, and numbers of paid staff and volunteers.
The reports offer regional profiles of the sector in all provinces and territories, and also put forward a number of key recommendations on what government, businesses and organizations can do to strengthen the capacity of the sector to better serve Canadians. Some of these include:
